West Park Dance Department Purpose Statement
The purpose of the West Park Dance Program is to provide students with a rigorous, supportive, and inclusive learning environment where dance is experienced as both an artistic discipline and a tool for personal growth. Through technique training, choreography, performance, reflection, and collaboration, students develop physical skill, artistic voice, resilience, and confidence.
This program emphasizes authenticity, discipline, and continual growth while fostering a strong sense of community and emotional awareness. Students are encouraged to take creative risks, learn from feedback, and build lifelong skills such as perseverance, communication, and self-reflection. Dance is approached as a process-driven art form that supports physical, emotional, and social well-being.
The Dance Department’s vision is to create a community where students:
Feel seen, valued, and supported as individuals within a collaborative artistic environment
Develop confidence, authenticity, and artistic voice through movement, expression, and performance
Build resilience and perseverance through physically and creatively challenging processes
Embrace growth over perfection, using effort, reflection, and feedback to improve
Collaborate with respect and empathy, learning to communicate, listen, and support one another
Explore creativity through choreography, improvisation, and interpretation
Develop physical awareness and wellness through safe, mindful movement practices
Reflect on experiences to better understand themselves, their emotions, and their connection to others
Transfer skills gained through dance, discipline, empathy, and self-awareness beyond the classroom
